Frequently Asked Questions

What does the body need magnesium for?

Magnesium is needed for every cell, all tissue and every organ in your body. Magnesium is indispensable for life and the body must have it. No organism can produce magnesium by itself but without it, life cannot exist.
Magnesium plays a role in

  • the proper functioning of approx. 300 different metabolic catalysts,
  • conduction in nerve and muscle cells,
  • the release of certain hormones
  • producing solid bones.

All of these processes and functions are impaired if there is too little magnesium in the body.
It is no surprise that magnesium  appears to be a sort of cure-all. However once you know all the things it does the connection is easy to make.
It is therefore all the more important to not forget about magnesium.

An intake of 300-350 mg of magnesium, depending on age, gender and level of activity. However, patients with magnesium deficiency will always need more magnesium. Simply taking this dosage as a magnesium tablet supplement won’t work as up to 95% is lost in the gut and it’s a laxative.

Up to 90% of people can be said to be magnesium deficient.

Which symptoms indicate magnesium deficiency?

Due to the numerous functions of magnesium in the bod, magnesium deficiency generally causes several symptoms at a time.
The list below contains the symptoms most commonly named in a patient self-assessment based on a rating scale using a questionnaire with 86 symptoms:

  • Irritability
  • Tiredness
  • Rapid exhaustion
  • Inner restlessness
  • Cold feet
  • Headaches
  • Weariness/lack of energy
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Brooding
  • Numbness in hands and feet
  • Excessive need to sleep
  • Palpitation, tachycardia
  • Weakness
  • Backaches
  • Muscle cramps, e.g. calf cramps, spasms , twitching of the eyelid.

When should I take magnesium or additional magnesium?

If you have any of these symptoms;

  • Irritability
  • Tiredness
  • Rapid exhaustion
  • Inner restlessness
  • Cold feet
  • Headaches
  • Weariness/lack of energy
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Brooding
  • Numbness in hands and feet
  • Excessive need to sleep
  • Palpitation, tachycardia
  • Weakness
  • Backaches
  • Muscle cramps, e.g. calf cramps, spasms , twitching of the eyelid..

If your discomfort is due to a magnesium deficiency, our experience has shown that the symptoms will decrease or disappear completely after taking magnesium supplements.
However, it is recommended to consult a physician if symptoms worsen or persist.

Which supplements are recommended? Which are the best?

There is a large number of magnesium supplements which can be bought over the counter in your local pharmacy. At magnesium.guru we don’t recommend oral supplements at all because ‘ain’t nobody got time for that’ :-).
Seriously, we have read studies that show taking oral magnesium is fairly pointless because up 95% is lost in the gut.
Given that many of us who are interested in our health are already paying attention to our diets and that this alone is time consuming enough, adding magnesium rich foods to the list of things we must have is an extra and unnecessary burden that actually makes little difference.
Taking magnesium transdermally, via the skin, is hands down the most effective way to get it into your whole system and also it can be sprayed or applied to exactly where your problem or pain is bringing rapid relief.

What brand of magnesium do I use / recommend?

The most frequent question I am asked is if there’s a brand I recommend. There is, I use an Australian product from Amazing Oils as this is the brand I was given when I first found out about it. It’s a bit of pain in the arse as I don’t live in the country it’s made but they deliver within a week to where I live.
I like the company and the people and they only make transdermal magnesium and don’t lie to people by selling the tablet form for the reasons I mentioned above.
Yes I have tried other brands, no they didn’t work as well for me.e skin, is hands down the most effective way to get it into your whole system and also it can be sprayed or applied to exactly where your problem or pain is bringing rapid relief.
